Farkas Loses Vote on Palestinian Flag Motion

Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas suffered an early setback on council after losing a vote to fast-track a motion aimed at banning the raising of foreign national flags at city hall. The proposed change to the city’s flag-policy followed a recent controversy over the raising of the Palestinian flag at municipal plaza events. Councillor Dan McLean introduced the motion as urgent business, with Farkas strongly supporting the move.

Council voted 8–7 against adding the item to the agenda, meaning the motion was not debated or considered at the meeting. Supporters of the fast-tracking argued that immediate clarity was needed to prevent inconsistent treatment of future flag-raising requests. Opposing councillors argued the move was reactionary, lacked community consultation, and risked escalating tensions among Calgary’s multicultural communities.

The defeat highlights the early challenges facing the new mayor in building consensus around symbolic and culturally sensitive issues. Although the motion may return at a future committee or council meeting, the close vote signals that Farkas will need broader coalition-building to advance his agenda.
