Calgary proposes $16.6 million for future Green Line extensions to Seton and north
By Calgary Dispatch Newsroom ·
Calgary administration is recommending approximately $16.6 million in spending over the 2027–2030 budget period to advance planning for future Green Line LRT extensions. A report prepared for the November 3 Executive Committee meeting identifies about $4.1 million for additional design work on the southeastern line from Shepard toward Seton and approximately $12.5 million for the northern corridor. The document follows council's request for updated information ahead of November's budget deliberations. It is a planning proposal, not authorization to begin building either extension.
The southeastern route would ultimately serve communities including McKenzie Towne, Auburn Bay and Seton, with an important connection to the South Health Campus. The current funded Green Line phase stops at Shepard. Supporters of advancing design argue that keeping the project ready could improve future funding opportunities and give residents a clearer path to the long-promised extension. The northern corridor involves a different set of engineering, land and alignment questions, helping explain its larger proposed planning allocation. Capital costs and construction financing remain unresolved for both corridors.
The proposal arrives as Calgary faces difficult choices about infrastructure spending and the timing of future growth. Southeast neighbourhoods continue expanding, while the City is also considering significant suburban development and large investments in its water system. The extensions must be assessed in terms of potential ridership, access to jobs and hospitals, available rights of way and prospects for provincial or federal contributions. Planning expenditures do not constitute a commitment that Green Line trains will reach Seton by a particular date.
