Stampeders seize playoff tiebreaker with huge road win in Regina

By ·

The Calgary Stampeders picked up one of their most important wins of the season Friday night, beating the Saskatchewan Roughriders 37-31 at Mosaic Stadium to improve to 8-8. Vernon Adams Jr. completed 22 of 29 passes for 242 yards and four touchdowns without an interception, connecting for scores with Clark Barnes, Damien Alford, Tevin Jones and Jalen Philpot. The victory was Calgary’s third straight and also gave the Stampeders the season-series tiebreaker over Saskatchewan after the teams split their two meetings.

Calgary set the tone early and repeatedly punished Saskatchewan mistakes. The Stampeders turned two Roughriders turnovers into 14 points and did not commit a turnover themselves, while Adams continued what has become the best touchdown-passing season of his CFL career. His four scoring passes pushed him to a career-high 34 on the year, one week after he threw for 422 yards in Calgary’s win over Ottawa. Philpot remained Adams’ most frequent target Friday, finishing with eight catches for 72 yards and a touchdown.

More importantly, Calgary has changed the shape of its season in less than a month. The Stampeders were 5-8 after their Labour Day rematch loss to Edmonton but have now won three consecutive games and returned to .500 at the most important point of the schedule. Owning the tiebreaker over Saskatchewan could prove decisive if the clubs finish level, and Calgary no longer needs to look at the crossover as its only realistic postseason route. With Adams playing some of his best football of the year, the question has shifted from whether the Stampeders can survive the race to whether they can make themselves one of the teams nobody wants to face once the playoffs begin.
