Stampeders' playoff fate rests with B.C. as Calgary faces four possible scenarios
By Calgary Dispatch Newsroom ·
The Calgary Stampeders have finished their regular season, but their hopes of competing for the Grey Cup remain alive heading into the CFL's final weekend. Calgary's 32-13 victory over the B.C. Lions on Saturday allowed the club to finish with a 9-9 record and remain in the postseason race, despite having no games remaining on its schedule. The Stampeders now need an unlikely assist from the very team they defeated: B.C. must beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday, October 23, to keep Calgary's season alive. A Winnipeg victory would eliminate the Stampeders, regardless of what happens elsewhere in the league.
Even if Winnipeg loses, Calgary's playoff destination will depend on Saturday's regular-season finale between the Edmonton Elks and Saskatchewan Roughriders. If Saskatchewan defeats Edmonton, the Roughriders will claim the remaining Western Division playoff position, sending Calgary across divisions to face the Toronto Argonauts in the Eastern Semi-Final on October 31. If Saskatchewan loses, Calgary will instead finish third in the West and travel to Vancouver to face the Lions in the Western Semi-Final. Saskatchewan has already secured a postseason berth and will advance regardless of Saturday's result, while Winnipeg must defeat B.C. to qualify. The unusual circumstances mean Calgary could reach the playoffs through two entirely different routes, each presenting a distinct challenge.
For the Stampeders, the waiting game represents a frustrating conclusion to a season in which the club fought to recover from a difficult second half. Calgary had fallen to 5-8 before rallying to win four of its final five games, including its decisive victory over B.C. The resurgence may yet earn the team a playoff appearance, but the Stampeders can do nothing more on the field to influence their fate. There is also a particularly compelling backdrop to Calgary's postseason hopes: McMahon Stadium will host the 113th Grey Cup on November 15. Whether the hometown team has an opportunity to compete for a place in that championship game will now be decided by results in Vancouver and Regina.
