Perfect Dinos chase history as unbeaten season enters final stretch

By ·

The University of Calgary Dinos have reached the point where an impressive start has become something much larger. Calgary entered Thursday’s home matchup with Lethbridge at a perfect 10-0 in Canada West play, sitting atop the Prairie Division after outscoring opponents 27-3 through its first 10 matches. The latest victory may have been the most meaningful yet: goals from Sofia DiGiacomo and Erica Mysko gave the Dinos a 2-1 win over crosstown rival Mount Royal, completing a season sweep of a Cougars side whose only two losses have come against Calgary.

The numbers demonstrate how complete the Dinos have been. Calgary has combined a dangerous attack with one of the stingiest defences in the country, and its ability to win in different ways has become increasingly important as the season has progressed. The Dinos have produced five-goal blowouts, extended stretches without conceding and tight victories over nationally competitive opponents. Now they face back-to-back home matches against a Lethbridge side that entered the week at 2-7-1, giving Calgary an opportunity to push the perfect record even deeper into October while strengthening its position to host postseason soccer at McMahon Stadium.

There is also a sense of an era beginning to close. Friday’s second match against Lethbridge will serve as senior night for Jaden Tomaszewski, Mykena Walker, Ella Djuranic, Sofia DiGiacomo and Erica Mysko, each playing their final regular-season conference home game for the Dinos. That gives Calgary’s pursuit of perfection an additional emotional layer: several of the players responsible for building this unbeaten season are running out of regular-season appearances together. At 10-0, the goal is no longer merely securing a playoff spot. The Dinos have put themselves in position to chase an undefeated conference season — and, increasingly, to ask whether this group can turn one of the best regular seasons in program history into a Canada West and national championship run.
