Imperial Oil posts record $2.45-billion quarterly profit as refining margins surge

By ·

Imperial Oil reported record third-quarter net income of $2.454 billion on October 30, compared with $539 million in the corresponding quarter of 2025. The year-earlier result included significant restructuring and impairment charges, making a straight unadjusted comparison misleading, but underlying earnings also improved substantially. Imperial's downstream division earned approximately $1.555 billion as stronger refining margins more than offset lower refinery utilization. Operating cash flow reached $3.228 billion during the quarter, while upstream production averaged about 418,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

The company returned more than $2.5 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases. Its results illustrate why production volumes and profitability can move in different directions. Oil sands operations experienced lower output at some facilities, and refinery utilization declined, yet higher prices for refined products supported the bottom line. That creates an interesting contrast across Calgary's economy: energy companies with refining capacity may benefit from favourable margins while airlines, transportation operators and other fuel-intensive businesses report higher costs.

The earnings raise broader questions about how Alberta's energy windfall is being used. Investors will be watching capital spending, debt reduction, acquisitions and distributions to shareholders, as well as whether companies commit to new production projects. Imperial is also reassessing the timing of its proposed Aspen oil sands development. The division of cash flow between expansion and shareholder returns will help establish whether record profitability translates into substantial new employment, drilling and production, rather than assuming those measures rise together.
