Flames seek fast reset in Vancouver after opening-night collapse
By Calgary Dispatch News Desk ·
The Calgary Flames will get an immediate opportunity to put a disastrous opening night behind them when they face the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena Saturday at 8 p.m. MT. Calgary was beaten 6-1 by Seattle on Thursday, allowing three goals in the opening period and never recovering in what was supposed to be the celebratory beginning of the Saddledome’s final season. Vancouver enters at 1-1 after two chaotic games against Edmonton, scoring 13 goals but allowing 14 in a 6-5 win and a 9-7 loss.
Calgary’s morning-skate lines suggest the Flames will continue leaning heavily on the youth that earned roster spots during training camp. Matvei Gridin is projected to skate with Morgan Frost and Matt Coronato, while Sam Honzek remains alongside Mikael Backlund and Joel Farabee. Brennan Othmann is expected to play with Ryan Strome and Yegor Sharangovich, and Zayne Parekh is projected to remain alongside Jake Middleton on the third defence pairing. Devin Cooley and Dustin Wolf are the two listed goaltenders for the game.
The biggest challenge for Calgary is less about personnel than about avoiding the breakdowns that buried it against Seattle. Joel Farabee acknowledged Friday that the Flames cannot afford extended mental lapses, while head coach Ryan Huska said the club identified several areas that needed immediate improvement before turning its attention to Vancouver. The Canucks’ own defensive problems suggest this could become an open game, but Calgary cannot depend on trading chances after conceding six in its opener. Saturday is therefore an early test of whether a younger Flames roster can respond quickly to adversity — and whether the structure that disappeared against Seattle can reappear before one bad night becomes a bad start.
