Flames give Morgan Frost top-line opportunity as training camp takes shape

By ·

The Calgary Flames are giving Morgan Frost an early opportunity to claim a larger role. Through the first three days of training camp, Frost has centred a line with Matvei Gridin and Matt Coronato, while also working on Calgary’s first power-play unit alongside Gridin, Coronato, Joel Farabee and defenceman Zayne Parekh. The alignment is an early indication that Frost, entering his second full season with the Flames, is being considered for significant offensive responsibility.

The opportunity comes as Calgary reshapes its forward group. Farabee has been skating alongside Mikael Backlund in a more defensive role after Blake Coleman’s offseason departure, while Ryan Strome has been centring Connor Zary and Yegor Sharangovich. Frost’s unit, meanwhile, offers a mix of established scoring ability and younger skill, with Gridin getting a prominent look after appearing in the Flames’ prospect camp earlier this month.

The first test comes Sunday when Calgary opens its four-game preseason schedule against the Seattle Kraken at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Training-camp combinations are never guaranteed to survive into opening night, but Frost’s placement gives him the chance to make an early case that he belongs in a first- or second-line centre role when the regular season begins.
