Dinos improve to 5-0 after shutting out Saskatchewan

By ·

The University of Calgary Dinos women’s soccer team continued its perfect start Saturday, defeating the Saskatchewan Huskies 1-0 at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon. The victory moved Calgary to 5-0-0, while Saskatchewan dropped to 3-1-1. After a scoreless first half, Sofia DiGiacomo broke the deadlock nine minutes into the second half.

The winning play began with Rowyn James, who delivered a free kick from more than 40 yards out into the Saskatchewan penalty area. The ball created confusion between the Huskies goalkeeper and a defender, allowing DiGiacomo to scramble it across the line for her second goal in as many games. James nearly doubled the lead later in the half when she struck the post in the 73rd minute.

Calgary’s defensive form has been just as important as its scoring. Goalkeeper Cheridan Johnson and the Dinos defence recorded their third clean sheet in four games, keeping Saskatchewan off the board despite an evenly played match in which both teams finished with five shots. The Dinos have little turnaround time before returning to action Sunday against the Regina Cougars as they try to extend their undefeated start.
