Cavalry steady the ship with 4-2 win as Shield race goes to final day

By ·

Cavalry FC picked the right moment to rediscover its winning touch. After watching a once-comfortable lead atop the Canadian Premier League disappear during a three-match winless stretch, Calgary responded with a 4-2 victory over Pacific FC at ATCO Field on Saturday. The result kept Cavalry in control of first place heading into the final weekend of the regular season and gave Tommy Wheeldon Jr.’s side a badly needed response after consecutive losses to Atlético Ottawa and Inter Toronto were followed by a late draw in Halifax.

The victory also provided another milestone in what has already been one of the strongest attacking seasons in club history. Cavalry pushed its season total to 57 goals, establishing a new CPL single-season scoring record and underlining just how dangerous Calgary has been when its attack is functioning properly. More importantly, the four-goal performance arrived under genuine pressure. Forge FC also won over the weekend, meaning the two clubs remain locked together in the Shield race and Cavalry could not afford another stumble after surrendering the advantage it had built earlier in the fall.

That sets up a remarkably simple final act: Cavalry now has one match left to turn months of league-leading form into silverware. The late-season wobble has removed almost all of the margin for error, but Saturday showed Calgary is still capable of producing the attacking football that carried it to the top of the table in the first place. What looked only a week ago like the beginning of a title collapse now becomes a one-game championship push — and Cavalry will enter it knowing that if it can finish the job, the frustrations of the past three weeks will matter far less than the trophy waiting at the end.
