Cavalry and Forge meet at Spruce Meadows with CPL lead at stake
By Calgary Dispatch News Desk ·
Cavalry FC hosts Forge FC Saturday afternoon in what the Canadian Premier League is billing as one of the most consequential matches of the season. Calgary enters the weekend in first place, four points ahead of second-place Forge, with just over a month remaining in the regular-season schedule. The match kicked off at 3 p.m. MT at ATCO Field at Spruce Meadows.
Cavalry arrives in strong form after clinching a playoff berth with a 1-0 victory over Pacific FC last weekend, when Daan Klomp scored the winner in the 81st minute. Calgary also beat Forge 2-1 in their previous meeting on Aug. 15, giving the club an opportunity Saturday to strengthen its hold on first place while denying its closest challenger valuable points.
The stakes are especially high because this is Forge’s final regular-season opportunity to take points directly from Cavalry. A Forge victory would shrink Calgary’s lead to one point with six games remaining, while another Cavalry win would create significant separation at the top of the table. Whatever the final result, the matchup has the feel of a late-season measuring stick between the two clubs currently setting the pace in the CPL.
