Cavalry and Forge enter final weekend deadlocked in dramatic CPL title race
By Calgary Dispatch Newsroom ·
Cavalry FC is one victory away from potentially claiming the Canadian Premier League Shield, but the Calgary club will need to survive one final challenge from longtime rival Forge FC to secure the regular-season championship. The two clubs enter Sunday's final round tied on 57 points, with Cavalry sitting atop the standings thanks to a seven-goal advantage in goal difference. Calgary's crucial 4-2 victory over Pacific FC on Saturday ended a three-match winless streak and ensured the title race would remain in Cavalry's hands heading into the final weekend. The performance also delivered a piece of league history, as Cavalry established a new CPL single-season scoring record with 57 goals.
The championship will be decided Sunday, October 25, when Cavalry hosts Vancouver FC at ATCO Field while Forge travels to face Pacific FC. Both clubs enter the final weekend tied on points, victories and head-to-head results, leaving goal difference as the decisive tiebreaker if they finish level on points and wins. Cavalry's seven-goal cushion provides an important advantage, but does not guarantee the Shield. A Forge victory combined with a Cavalry draw or defeat would hand the Hamilton club the title, while a Calgary victory would force Forge to win and make up a substantial scoring deficit to move ahead. Forge also faces an unusually demanding week, playing CF Montréal in the Canadian Championship final on Wednesday before returning to league action four days later.
For Cavalry, the stakes extend beyond another piece of silverware. Finishing first would reward one of the most productive attacking seasons in league history and strengthen the club's position heading into the CPL playoffs. The rivalry with Forge has been one of the defining competitions in Canadian professional soccer, and another regular-season championship would further establish Calgary among the league's leading organizations. After a season of record-setting offence and a title race that has gone down to the final matchday, Cavalry has an opportunity to settle the question on its home field. The task is straightforward: defeat Vancouver and make Forge chase an increasingly unlikely scoring turnaround.
