Calgary Stampede names Kyla Lightfoot and Chondra Fox as 2027 ambassadors
By Calgary Dispatch Newsroom ·
The Calgary Stampede has selected its two principal 2027 ambassadors, announcing Kyla Lightfoot as the next Stampede Princess and Chondra Fox of Kainai Nation as First Nations Princess. Lightfoot was crowned October 30 at Sam Centre after a competition assessing horsemanship, public speaking and interviews. Fox was named October 25 following a separate competition emphasizing cultural knowledge, traditional dance and communication. Both will begin their ambassador terms January 1, 2027, participating in public events throughout the year.
Lightfoot, a Mount Royal University journalism and digital media student, has experience in several equestrian disciplines and national competition. Fox is a Jingle Dress dancer whose Blackfoot name, Naamitapiaakii, means Lone Woman. Their roles involve more than ceremonial appearances: the representatives help communicate the Stampede's programs and traditions to visitors, community groups and audiences beyond Calgary. The First Nations Princess position also provides a visible opportunity to share the histories, cultures and contemporary experiences of Treaty 7 communities.
As Calgary prepares for another Stampede season, the appointments offer an opportunity to learn about the people behind these public-facing roles. Their backgrounds, goals for the year and community commitments will shape how they represent the event. The cultural responsibilities of the First Nations Princess position extend beyond ceremonial appearances and include sharing Treaty 7 traditions and contemporary community experiences. The two selections provide a local community story amid a news cycle otherwise dominated by politics and infrastructure.
