Alberta proposes fines of up to $1 million for illegal dumping
By Calgary Dispatch News Desk ·
Alberta is proposing substantially tougher penalties for illegal dumping, with corporations facing fines ranging from $100,000 to $1 million if the changes receive legislative approval. Individuals could be fined between $10,000 and $100,000, while courts would also gain the authority to impose jail sentences in certain circumstances. The province says the amendments are intended to make penalties reflect the environmental and financial damage caused by unlawfully discarded waste.
The planned amendments to the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act would also strengthen oversight of higher-risk waste-transfer and storage facilities and provide enforcement officers with additional investigative tools. Provincial officials argue illegal dumping can contaminate water, harm wildlife, create public-safety hazards and leave farmers, landowners, municipalities and taxpayers responsible for cleanup expenses. The legislation has not yet passed, meaning the proposed fines and enforcement provisions are not currently in force.
Albertans are being asked to document and report suspected dumping rather than confront those responsible. Incidents involving an immediate environmental concern can be reported through the province’s 24-hour response line at 1-800-222-6514, while dumping on municipal property should be reported to the local government. Cases on public or Crown land can be reported through 310-LAND. The effectiveness of the new approach will ultimately depend not only on higher maximum fines, but also on inspections, successful prosecutions and the province’s ability to identify those responsible.
